Bringing Anaesthetics And BioElectronics Into 2020

Anaesthetists have used bioelectronics for decades.

Despite the continued use and positive impact of the technology, the system has not progressed far beyond its original inception. The question needs to be asked, how can we update and improve this technology to match the updated medical environment it is in?

Over the decades, bioelectronics has played an important role alongside anaesthetists in the operating theatre and in intensive care units.

During operations when a general anaesthetic is required, or for the most critically ill patients under sedation, neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs) are used to decrease the work of autonomous breathing and facilitate mechanical ventilation.

Therefore, to ensure patients receive the appropriate clinical management and support throughout a procedure, the quality of anaesthesia must be continually measured using a peripheral nerve stimulator (PNS), also known as a ‘train-of-four monitor.’

A train-of-four PNS uses bioelectrical currents to stimulate muscles and enables anaesthetists to assess and monitor how effective the NMBA is at that exact moment.

This consequently informs clinical decisions during and after surgery or whilst in intensive care to ensure; appropriate extubation timing, NMBA reversal dosing, optimal recovery and decrease the likelihood of harmful effects due to residual NMBA.

The importance of a train-of-four device is indisputable, with the Royal College of Anaesthetists stating mandatory use in general anaesthesia and ICU settings. Despite this, the technology behind the system has progressed little since its original inception. As a result, these devices often do not work intuitively and are often too complex for fast, practical use during anaesthesia.

Therefore, we’re collaborating with anaesthetics and bioelectronics experts to pioneer bringing the train-of-four into 2020.

NuroKor's updated technology will retain the simplicity of the traditional device in a more robust unit that allows for more intuitive use, with improved ergonomics and sustained accuracy.

We’ll be sharing more information as we edge closer to the launch of NuroKor Anaesthetics. If you are an anaesthetist, a bioelectrical specialist or would just like to stay up to date with our latest developments, we’d love to hear from you.
